Governmental Relations
In order to successfully identify, track and contribute to critical state governmental issues, CMDC voted this year to retain the services of Jefferson City-based firm Schlemeier & Associates. This firm tracks relevant bills and reports back to the CMDC board on their progress. In 2007, CMDC members will be able to monitor new legislative activities directly from the CMDC Web site through the firm’s publication GovWatch.

Members have also been active on a local basis. Many of CMDC’s members have been involved with the appointment process of new planning and zoning members. CMDC also supported two candidates during the City Council elections. There is great concern that the local government needs high-quality, experienced leadership in these positions.

CMDC also formed strategic partnerships at all levels of local government, from the city manager to department heads and elected officials. More communication with these critical city figures means more results for CMDC and its efforts.

Zoning Battles
2006 marked a notorious year for planning and zoning battles. The process can easily become contentious and difficult, while those involved lose sight of the end benefits — high-paying jobs, quality neighborhoods and a strong, thriving local economy. CMDC’s goal this past year was to remain active in assisting with zoning decisions, and encouraging committee and City Council members to base their decisions on appropriate land use, not on the political atmosphere.

Looking Ahead…
The board and membership of CMDC are enthusiastic about 2007. Primary goals for the next 12 months include:

• Sustaining pressure on growth-limiting zoning
• Continuing to monitor fees and ordinances
• Following the statewide political atmosphere
• Supporting community initiatives
• Encouraging the local economy and job production
• Maintaining a strong, unified voice in the media
